If there is one photography experience that has come to define Santorini in the past decade, it is the flying dress Santorini experience — the photoshoot that has put the island on the global photography map. A trained photographer, a dramatic caldera backdrop, a large-format silk dress that catches the Aegean wind — and images that look like high-end editorial fashion photography, produced in an afternoon, requiring no modelling experience whatsoever. This guide covers everything you need to know to plan yours: what the experience actually involves, which locations work best, how to choose your dress colour, and how to book the session that produces the photographs you have already seen in your social media feed and wondered how to get.
What Is a Flying Dress Photoshoot?
A flying dress photoshoot is a professional photography session built around a specific type of dress: a large-format gown, typically 2 to 4 metres of silk, in the skirt alone, designed to catch the wind and create a flowing, dramatic silhouette in photographs. The dress is not worn in the conventional sense — it is held, released, and repositioned by a dedicated assistant throughout the session, while the photographer captures the precise moments when the fabric is at its most dynamic.
The result is a series of images that look, to anyone seeing them for the first time, like they required a professional model, a studio wind machine, and a production team. They required none of those things. They required Santorini’s natural caldera wind, a photographer who knows when to press the shutter, and a client who was willing to stand on a cliff above the Aegean for 60 to 120 minutes.
The flying dress concept originated in Santorini specifically — the island’s thermal winds, rising from the caldera below the village rim, create natural dress movement that no other photography location in the Mediterranean can reliably replicate. The caldera wind is the invisible ingredient that makes these photographs possible, and it is why Santorini remains the definitive flying dress destination even as the format has spread to other locations around the world.

The Best Locations for Your Santorini Flying Dress Shoot
Choosing the right location is the most consequential decision in planning a flying dress session. Each of Santorini’s main villages offers different conditions — different wind reliability, different architectural backdrops, different crowd dynamics — and the right choice depends on what you want your photographs to look like.
Oia
Oia is the most requested flying dress location on the island, and it earns that reputation. The blue-domed churches, the white cubic architecture stacked along the caldera rim, and the distinctive narrow lanes of the village create a backdrop that is immediately and unmistakably Santorini. A flying dress photographed in front of Oia’s famous domes, with the Aegean visible behind and below, produces the most recognisable flying dress image available on the island.
The practical consideration with Oia is timing. After approximately 9-10 AM in high season, the village fills with tourists and the most photogenic positions become crowded. We schedule all Oia flying dress sessions as early morning bookings — starting between 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM — specifically to have the lanes and the blue dome area to ourselves. In this window, the light is exceptional (warm, horizontal, flattering), the village is empty, and the wind from the caldera is already active.
One important logistical note for Oia: some of the most famous positions — particularly the area directly in front of the blue dome churches — require careful navigation of the village’s narrow access paths while managing a large-format dress. Our photographers and assistants know exactly which routes allow the dress to move freely and which require a different approach.
Imerovigli
Imerovigli is our professional preference for flying dress sessions, and the village we recommend most confidently to clients who ask for our honest opinion. Sitting at the highest point of the caldera rim — 350 metres above the sea — Imerovigli offers the most reliable caldera wind on the island, the most dramatic vertical backdrop, and significantly fewer tourists than Oia at almost every hour of the day.
The key location within Imerovigli is the caldera edge path: a series of accessible viewpoints along the rim that provide open-sky backdrops, the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni visible in the sea below, and the consistent upward thermal wind that makes dress movement in photographs effortless. For wide-angle images where the dress and the person appear as part of a vast, dramatic landscape rather than against an architectural backdrop, the Imerovigli caldera edge is unmatched on the island.
We also use the path leading to Skaros Rock in Imerovigli — a 20-minute walk from the village centre to the ruins of a medieval castle on a promontory above the caldera. The views from this path, with the village visible behind and the open caldera in every other direction, produce flying dress images of extraordinary scale that are almost entirely absent from the mainstream Santorini photography you have seen before.

How to Choose Your Dress Colour
The colour of the flying dress you choose will interact directly with the backdrop of your session, and the right choice varies significantly depending on your location and the time of day. This is not a decision to make casually — it has a meaningful effect on how your final images look. We provide a list of all available dress colors to our clients.
Against White Walls (Oia and Imerovigli Village Lanes)
White walls provide a neutral backdrop that gives maximum flexibility. Almost any dress colour produces good contrast against Santorini’s whitewashed plaster. The most consistently striking choices are colours with genuine visual impact — deep royal blue, rich red tones, warm purple, and neon green all photograph with power against white. Pastel colours work well for a softer, more romantic aesthetic. White and cream dresses against white walls require very precise positioning to maintain distinction between the dress and the background, and are better suited to clients who are comfortable working with a more subtle contrast.
Against the Open Caldera (Imerovigli Edge and Skaros Path)
The caldera backdrop is predominantly deep blue sea and sky. Against this background, warm tones create the most striking contrast — fuchsia, burnt purple, warm gold, and deep red all stand out with excellent visual impact. Cooler blues and greens can blend with the blue caldera background in ways that reduce the dress’s prominence in the image; they work, but require more careful exposure management. White and gold are exceptional against the blue caldera — the contrast is clean and elegant.
At Sunset
The sunset sky over the Santorini caldera progresses through a specific palette: warm gold, deepening red, rich fuchsia, and eventually deep purple. Dresses that harmonise with this progression — warm golds, deep reds, and soft pinks — photograph with an extraordinary quality of colour integration at this hour. Blues and greens become more powerful as the sky darkens into blue-purple.
Our Recommendation
If you are choosing a colour from our collection and want our honest recommendation for maximum visual impact: deep red or rich royal blue for caldera-edge sessions; purple or gold for sunset sessions; and any strong colour for the architectural Oia lanes, where the white walls will make almost anything look exceptional.

Morning vs Sunset Session: Which Is Right for You?
This is the most common question we receive from clients planning a flying dress session, and the honest answer is that both are excellent for different reasons.
Morning sessions (starting 6:30–8:30 AM) give you Santorini at its most peaceful and most photogenic: empty villages, extraordinary warm light, reliable caldera wind that has been building overnight. The primary advantage is solitude — in morning sessions at Oia and Imerovigli, you are working in conditions that the afternoon and evening cannot replicate, with locations that belong entirely to you. The one requirement is the willingness to set an alarm for 5:30 AM. For almost every client who has done both, the morning session produces the preferred images.
Sunset sessions (starting 90 minutes before sunset) give you the famous Santorini light progression — the warm gold, the deepening rose, the extraordinary quality of the sky as the sun drops into the sea. The caldera wind is active at this hour, the light on the white walls is beautiful, and the atmosphere of the island in the early evening has a particular romantic quality. The trade-off is that the famous sunset viewpoints attract crowds; our photographers know how to work around this, but it requires more logistical navigation than a morning session.
If you are visiting Santorini for more than two days and the budget allows: book both. Morning for Oia, sunset for the caldera edge at Imerovigli. The two sessions together cover the full range of flying dress photography that the island can produce.
What Is Included in Our Flying Dress Packages?
Our Santorini flying dress packages include the photography session (60 minutes as standard, with 2-hour and 30mins options available), a professional photographer, a dedicated dress assistant who manages the dress throughout the session, a selection of flying dresses in your preferred colour and size, and the edited image gallery. Standard gallery delivery is 2–3 business days after the session, with a same day rush option available.
Dress sizes range from XS to XXL across our current collection. We carry a minimum of 8 dress colours at any given time, with seasonal additions. Full-length silk, styles are all available. If you have a specific dress you want to use, you are welcome to bring it — we can advise on whether it will work for your chosen location and conditions when you enquire.
Group flying dress sessions — for two or more people wearing dresses simultaneously — are available with advance notice. Group sessions are priced accordingly. They produce some of the most striking images we take on the island.
Real Client Gallery: What Flying Dress Photos From Santorini Actually Look Like
The photographs that appear on our website and in our social media feeds are real images from real client sessions — not staged production shoots, not professional models, not edited to the point of fiction. The client in the red dress on the Imerovigli caldera edge booked us six weeks before her Santorini trip, had never done a professional photoshoot before, and described herself as “not photogenic” in her initial enquiry. The client in the royal blue dress in the Oia lanes came with her sister for a birthday trip and chose flying dress photography on impulse after seeing our Instagram account.
We include this context not as false modesty but because the gap between what people expect from a flying dress session and what they actually receive is consistently significant. The images look professional because they are professionally produced — in the right location, at the right time, by photographers who have shot this format hundreds of times. They look the way they look because Santorini’s wind, light, and setting produce these results reliably. Your photographs will look like this too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring my own flying dress?
Yes. If you have a dress you want to use, we are happy to accommodate it. The key specifications for a dress to work well in flying dress photography are: lightweight fabric (silk, chiffon, or organza — heavier fabrics do not catch the wind effectively), a minimum skirt circumference of approximately 2-3 metres for adequate movement, and a length of at least 130 cm for the trailing effect in photographs. If you are unsure whether your dress meets these specifications, send us a photo before your session and we will advise honestly.
How many people can join a session?
Our standard flying dress sessions are for one person. Two-person sessions (typically a couple, or two friends who both want individual flying dress shots) are available with an extended session time and an additional assistant. Group sessions of three or more are available by arrangement — contact us to discuss the logistics for larger groups, as these require advance planning to execute well.
Do I need to know how to pose?
No. Posing guidance is provided throughout the session by your photographer. The majority of the most dramatic flying dress images require very little active posing — the dress and the wind create the visual impact, and your role is primarily to stand in a specific position while the assistant manages the fabric. Simple directions (look toward the caldera, turn slightly left, take three steps forward) are all that is required, and these are given clearly and naturally throughout the session.
What if the wind is too strong or not strong enough?
Wind conditions on Santorini’s caldera are remarkably reliable from April through October — the thermal current rising from the sea below the villages creates consistent air movement throughout the day that is generally excellent for flying dress photography. Occasionally, conditions are either stronger or lighter than optimal; our photographers and assistants are experienced in adapting to both. Extremely strong wind (rare, and typically associated with the Meltemi wind system in July and August) can require session relocation to a more sheltered position. We monitor forecasts closely and communicate any concerns before the session begins.
How quickly will I receive my photographs?
Standard delivery is 2–3 business days after your session. Rush delivery within same day is available at the time of booking and is particularly recommended for cruise passengers or visitors who will be leaving Greece before the standard delivery window.
What is the price of a flying dress photoshoot in Santorini?
Our flying dress sessions start at 349 euros for a 1-hour session including dress rental. The 2-hour session, which allows coverage of multiple locations and produces the most comprehensive gallery, is priced at 699 euros including dress. Exact pricing and current availability are listed on our flying dress booking page.
